N'ganj retain nat'l title

Narayanganj retained the national title when they downed neighbours Dhaka 3-1 in the penalty shootout after a goalless draw in regulation 90 minutes of the Jubok Phone National Football Championship final here yesterday.

Dhaka's hopes to regain the coveted trophy after 28 years was dashed when their young booters showed nerves in the tiebreaker, Belal hitting the bar before Maruf shot the second penalty wide.

Dhaka's semifinal hero Al Amin saved a shot from national striker Topu but the goalkeeper's effort was not enough as Abdullah Parvez, the mastermind of their semifinal victory over hosts Sylhet with an outstanding freekick, sent Al Amin the wrong way with a flick of his favourite left foot to send the Narayanganj booters into wild celebration.

Ritu and player-of-the-tournament Jumratul Islam Mithu also scored for Narayanganj while Polo was the only Dhaka player to hit the mark. Man-of-the-final Moloy, the Dhaka midfielder, also saw his attempt saved by Narayanganj custodian Mohammed Ali.

Despite the home sides' absence, the huge turnout -- a 30,000-plus crowd -- enjoyed an exciting final. The more experienced Narayanganj should have taken lead in the first half but for a series misses.

After weighing each others' strength for the first 15 minutes, the men from the river port created the first chance but Omar Faruq shot over the bar from 20 yards after being set up by Parvez.

Al Amin pulled off a spectacular save when Hanif Pradhan unleashed a pile driver from 15 yards but Ritu and Topu committed unpardonable mistakes, failing to beat the lone keeper.

Dhaka had the best chance of the game but Gafur hopelessly chipped the ball over the bar with only keeper Ali to beat.

A goalline clearance by Arafat denied Ritu from a certain goal during a Parvez corner after the break, keeping Dhaka in the game. The arrival of Belal and his long throw-ins terrorised the Narayan-ganj goal for the last 20 minutes but failed to get past a tight defence, taking the match straight into the shootout.

Bangladesh Football Federation president SA Sultan distributed trophies after the final.
