Elusive monsoon hovers over Dhaka sky

The sky above the city yesterday afternoon was enveloped in heavy clouds raising hopes of a belated monsoon downpour. A low, formed in the north of Bay of Bengal in the morning, turned into a well-marked low, creating cloudy weather in many parts of the country throughout the day, according to Met Office.

Prayers for rains continue in the city mosques, churches and temples. The groundwater level in the city is set to drop drastically if the monsoon rains remain elusive. This means the city water supply for 12 million people is set to worsen with the dropping water level in the underground.

The country this monsoon is experiencing a drought with farmers in the northern region facing difficulties in cultivating lands. Rainfall was recorded 25 percent less than average during the monsoon this year. In August the rain was 25 percent less than normal in the city while in July it was 24 percent less.

Weather experts are hopeful of a good rain under the impact of the low looming over the Bay. But all of the 10 lows formed in the Bay last month weakened and caused little rain in Bangladesh.
