Preparation of up-coming Lalon devotees

A visitor to the Chhewria Lalon's Akhra, now known as Lalon Academy Complex, is likely to encounter a group of young ones playing the ektara and singing Lalon songs with the elderly fakirs. Sometimes these child artistes perform solo for the gurus, while they mostly listen to the rendition of the latter or take part in a chorus. This is the prime route to learning Lalon songs, as the cult believes that Lalon songs can be acquired only through guru-shishya parampara (mentor-disciple tradition).

Children here get a scope to learn songs from seasoned fakirs such as Fakir Bazlu Shah, Fakir Manohor Shah, Rab Shah and Yasin Shah who have rendered Lalon songs at home and abroad.

Shirin Sultana, a 17-year-old, has chosen this path. As she said, "I'm from a fakir family. I come here with my father. I'm in the process of becoming a Lalon devotee; that's why I'm learning Lalon songs, as theses songs epitomise his doctrines."

To the delight and surprise of the visitor, a 12-year old named Shamim rendered philosophical Lalon songs. Like the fakirs, the boy swayed to the rhythm of the music. One of his companions is Shirin Akhtar, who has been learning since the age of five. Shirin said, "I really enjoy singing with the gurus."

Not just the offspring of the fakirs, but other children from Chewria village and surrounding areas of Kushtia district also gather at Lalon's shrine to learn the mystic's songs from traditional fakirs. Chanda Rakhi, a 10-year old said, "Earlier I used to learn music at some other institution; my parents have sent me here to learn Lalon songs from fakirs."

Fakir Bazlu Shah, one of the gurus, said, "One has to go to a guru to learn Lalon songs properly. I'm teaching them in a way that is similar to what we learnt from our gurus. And the learning process is not academic or classical music-based, rather the children acquire music ability in tranquility."

M Saiful Hassan Milon, district cultural officer, Kushtia, asserted, "This gathering has given exposure to many upcoming singers. We have sent many promising Lalon singers from the akhra to participate at musical soirees at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Dhaka. Moreover, at a tender age, they have embarked on the path of becoming professional singers."
