8 die, 60 hurt in road accidents


At least eight people were killed and 60 injured in separate road accidents in Sirajganj, Faridpur and Rajbari on Thursday night and yesterday.

BSS from Faridpur says: At least three people were killed and 10 others injured in a road accident near Salil Diya under Bhanga upazila on the Dhaka-Barisal highway on Thursday night.

Police said the accident occurred when a Barisal-bound passenger bus hit a truck.

The injured were admitted to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex. Of the injured, condition of four is critical.

Our Correspondent from Sirajganj adds: At least four people were killed and 50 others injured in two separate road accidents in Sirajganj district yesterday morning.

The first accident occurred at 6:30am at Bonbaria on the Dhaka-Sirajganj highway when a Dhaka-bound bus of SI Paribahan turned turtle and fell into a roadside ditch while trying to give side to a bus coming from the opposite direction, police and witnesses said.

Bus passenger Anowara Khatun, 40, wife of Abdul Bari of Ditpur village under Sirajganj Sadar Upazila and an unidentified child, aged about 7, died while they were being taken to the hospital. At least 30 people were injured in the accident.

Another accident occurred at around 9:30am, when a Tarash-bound bus collided head on with a covered van in front of Fulzor Degree College at Alokdiar on the Dhaka-Bogra Highway, killing two unidentified people and injuring 20 others.

Following the accident, agitating locals and students of the Fulzor College barricaded the road demanding a speed breaker in front the college.

The barricade caused communication disruption and untold sufferings for the passengers for 3 hours from 9:30am to 12:30pm. About 3 km traffic jam was created on both sides of the road during the agitation.

Police recovered the bodies and sent those to hospital morgue for autopsy.

UNB from Rajbari adds: A teenage boy was killed in a road accident at Gualunda crossing on Dauludia-Khulna Highway yesterday.

The boy identified as Azad, 12, son of Md Nuruddin of Khankhanapur area, was crushed under the wheels of an oil tank lorry at 7:00am.

Following the accident, local people put up barricade on the highway disrupting vehicular movement on the highway for about three hours.

Hundreds of vehicles of 21 district routs, including Dhaka, remained stranded on both the sides of the road, causing immense suffering to thousands of passengers.

On information, riot police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

The angry people withdrew the barricade at 10:00am after a discussion with the high police officials.
