Road accidents kill 4


At least four people were killed and 50 others injured in two separate road accidents in Sirajganj district yesterday morning.

The injured were admitted to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital and local clinics in the town.

A Dhaka bound bus turned turtle and fell into a road side pond at 6:30am while trying to give passage to another bus from opposite direction at Bonbaria on Dhaka-Sirajganj road in Sirajganj district, police and eyewitnesses said.

Bus passenger Anowara Khatun, 40, wife of Abdul Bari of Ditpour village in Sirajganj Sadar Upazila and an unidentified children, aged about 7, died on the way to hospital. At least 30 others were injured in the accident.

In another road accident a Tarash bound bus collided head-on with a covered van coming from opposite direction at Alokdiar area in front of Fulzor Degree College on Dhaka-Bogra highway at around 9:30am, killing two unidentified people and injuring 20 people.

Following the accident, agitating locals and students of the Fulzor College put barricade on the road demanding a speed breaker in front the college, causing communication disrupting for about three hours from 9:30am to 12:30pm. About three-kilometre long traffic jam was created on both sides of the road during the agitation.

Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

JU STUDENT INJURED
Our JU correspondent adds: A student of Jahangirnagar University (JU) was injured in a road accident on Dhaka-Aricha highway near the university Bishmile gate yesterday.

Hasan Ali, a masters student of Geography department and a resident student of Meer Musharraf Hossain hall, has been admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) with severe injuries in the head and legs. Doctors stated his condition to be critical.

The accident occurred when a Dhaka-bound bus from Dhamrai hit Hasan near the university while overtaking a truck at 8:00am.

"The university authorities have filed a case accusing the unidentified driver of the killer bus," said Maksuda, duty officer of Ashulia Police Station.
