Hartal observed in Rangpur for gas supply

A dawn-to-dusk hartal, called by Rangpur Unnayan Parishad to press home its four-point demand, was observed in the district yesterday amid spontaneous participation of people from all walks of life.

All shops and commercial centres in the town and upazila headquarters remained closed to express their solidarity with the hartal.

Motorised and non-motorised vehicles including bicycle, rickshaw and rickshawvan remained off the roads everywhere in the district.

No trains including Ekata Express and Teesta Intercity train left Rangpur station during 6:00am to 6:00pm.

Attendance was very thin in all government and semi-government offices.

There was no transaction in commercial banks.

The demands of the parishad included supply of gas in the district through pipeline, setting up of a university and education board and declaration of Rangpur division comprising eight northern districts.

Addressing a rally during hartal hours in the town, parishad leaders vowed to continue the movement until their demands are met.
