JMB member granted bail
Court Correspondent
A Dhaka court yesterday granted ad-interim bail to a Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) member arrested in connection with a bomb blast case filed with Kotwali Police Station in the capital on August 17 last year. This is the first time that Judge Momin Ullah of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court granted bail to Mohammad Shamim, 21, son of Abul Hashem of Balla under kalihati upazila in Tangail district. Shamim was shown arrested in the case on December 2 last year for his alleged involvement with serial bomb blasts across the country. Later, he was placed on a five-day remand for interrogation. During the remand, he gave important information about the August bomb blasts, the investigation officer said. The forwarding report placed by detective branch (DB) of police said Shamim, an active activist of JMB, was directly involved in the bomb blast at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court and Dhaka District Judge's Court. Moreover, Shamim admitted his involvement to the law enforcement agencies, the report added. The judge passed the order upon a bond of Tk 50,000 with two guarantors following a criminal appeal by defence lawyers Sheikh Mustaque Ahmed and Rafiqul Islam Mehedi against the rejection order of the lower court on July 24 this year. During the bail hearing, the prosecution argued that JMB military commander Ataur Rahman Sunny, also an accused in the case, gave a confessional statement on December 8 last year disclosing the names of other JMB leaders and members responsible for the bomb blasts.
