Staff Nurses Beaten by Miscreants
Suhrawardi Hospital staff observe work abstention
Patients suffer a lot

Medical and administrative works in Shaheed Suhrawardi Hospital, the third largest general hospital of the country, came to a halt yesterday causing immense sufferings to hundreds of patients following an attack on two staff nurses by a group of alleged miscreants of Sher-e-Bangla Agriculture University on Wednesday night.

Only a few patients could receive treatment at the emergency department after 2:00pm under special arrangement. But most of the patients moved to other hospitals for volatile situation in the hospital.

Officials, staffs, doctors and nurses of the hospital stopped performing duty protesting the attack on staff nurse Abu Bakar Siddik and Roisuddin of the emergency department. They staged a demonstration from 8:00am to10: 30am demanding immediate arrest and punishment of the attackers.

If the culprits are not arrested in 24 hours, we will launch a tougher movement, declared the furious demonstrators.

Their demands also include cancellation of studentship of the attackers, building security boundary wall, establishing permanent police camp and eviction of the slum adjoining the hospital.

They also held a protest meeting at the seminar room from 11:00am to 2:00pm and announced work abstention on Saturday from 10:00am to 12:00am.

Administrative officer of Suhrawardi Hospital Gazi Abdus Selim filed a case with Tejgaon Police Station against 40 unidentified miscreants.

A few students of Sher-e-Bangla Agriculture University went to the emergency department of the hospital at around 9:30pm on Wednesday and asked the nurses to give a penicillin injection for rheumatic fever to one of their fellow students. The duty nurses refused to give injection as they failed to show doctor's prescription.

A few minutes later, the students came back with strengthened force and beat the two nurses severely. They were admitted to the hospital but their condition turned critical, sources said.
