Star Business Report
National Board of Revenue (NBR) yesterday asked the four pre-shipment inspection (PSI) companies to award punishment to those officials who were involved in the recent container scam. The board also reached a decision on monitoring the activities of the PSI firms. The decision of such punitive measures was taken at a meeting with the PSI firms held at the NBR conference room with the board's chairman Mohammad Abdul Karim in the chair. The officials from Customs and Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) in the last couple of months have identified several containers of goods imported through adopting unfair means in declaration. A huge quantity of cigarette worth around Tk 8 crore were imported in the guise of cloths, which was revealed at the Dhaka inland container depot recently. The NBR in the meeting also asked the PSI companies for submitting their updated performance report to the board in order to make it informed. "We have decided to increase monitoring of the PSI firms' activities," a high official of the NBR said. The meeting also discussed many issues relating to the latest irregularities found in declarations and under-invoicing in import. It discussed different ways how to eliminate such corruption at the pre-shipment level.
