One killed in Ctg gas explosion

A beggar was killed and two pedestrians were wounded when a serious explosion due to leakage of gas from the underground supply line blew up part of a footpath at the city's Station Road area yesterday.

The dead was identified as Shafiqur Rahman, 65, of Patiya of the district. Identity of the wounded could not be known immediately.

The explosion, that happened in front of Mohiuddin Market just opposite the Chittagong Railway Station (new) at around 12:00noon, rocked the neighbouring business establishments creating panic among the passersby and people in the market building, the witnesses said.

A large portion of the concrete slab of the footpath over the sewer was destroyed due to the explosion.

Fire service sources said that the explosion occurred due to the leakage of gas from the supply line of Bakhrabad Gas System Limited running through the area.

Fire fighters extinguished the fire caused by the explosion and cleared out smokes and gas trapped inside the sewer making several holes on the footpath.
