6 to die for killing son, mother

A court in Moulvibazar yesterday sentenced six people to death in a sensational double murder case. Two others in the same case were awarded life imprisonment and fined Tk 25 thousand each. For failure to pay the fines, they will have to serve two more years' rigorous imprisonment. District and Sessions Judge, Moulvibazar Md Shahidullah delivered the much-awaited judgment in the case filed for murders of Sudha Rani and her son Ashok Deb Roy. The ones who received death sentence are Abdul Khalique, 102, Abdul Mannaf, 97, Abdul Muhit, 35, Abdur Rakib, 55, Ibrahim, 25, and Moshahid Miah. The mode of execution of death sentence will be hanging till death. Except Moshahid, all are now behind The two, given life imprisonment, are Abdul Matin and Fatema Begum. Of them, Abdul Matin is still on the run. Besides, Musharaf Hussain, Mubarak Hussain, Khalil and Al-Amin were acquitted of the murder charge. According to the prosecution, the accused along with some other people attacked the house of Sudha Rani Deb Roy at Jagatshi village of Moulvibazar sadar on April 8, 2001.The attack was made out of a long-standing feud over land. The attackers brutally murdered the mother and her son with sharp weapons in broad daylight. Uttam Deb Roy Swapan, another son of Sudha Rani, filed a murder case with Moulvibazar Police Station the same day. Public Prosecutor Abdul Khalique moved for the prosecution while advocate Mirza Sirajuddin Beg and advocate Abdul Muhaimin Chowdhury stood for the accused.
