Criminal killed in Rab 'crossfire'

An alleged criminal was killed during a 'shootout' between Rapid Action Battalion and a gang of criminals at Devipur Kazipara in Joypurhat district early yesterday.Masud Rana Babu, 23, hailed from Kazipara village, was arrested on Wednesday. He was accused in a number of criminal cases including four for murder. A Rab press release said Babu admitted his involvement in criminal activities. When a Rab team took him to Devipur area early yesterday to seize hidden firearms, criminals opened fire on the Rab men resulting in a shootout. Babu tried to flee during the encounter and was hit by bullets, the press release added. The Rab men later found bullet-hit Babu at a crop-field. He was rushed to Joypurhat Sadar Hospital where attending doctors declared him dead. The Rab press release said they recovered a pistol and six bullets from the scene.
