The government yesterday instructed field-level police and administrative officials to ensure a sound law and order situation in the country during the remaining days of the ruling coalition's government so that it enjoys a positive effect on the next general elections. The home ministry alerted them of reorganisation of Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) under different banners in parts of the country. It also directed the officials to handle the extortionists and illegal toll collectors strongly and keep the price of essentials stable. "We want to ensure that the law and order situation remains under control during the last three months of our government since there is a trend of deterioration in law and order situation during the twilight-months of each government. We want to hand over power to the caretaker government with the law and order situation in good shape," State Minister Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar told the media following a meeting with the deputy commissioners (DC) and Superintendents of Police (SP). Asked whether the government has received reports of subversive activities, Babar replied, "We haven't received any reports. But we need to remain careful and do the necessary homework to tackle any such situation." The DCs, SPs, divisional commissioners, deputy inspector generals of police, secretaries of the cabinet division, home, law and establishment ministries and the inspector general of police were also present at the special meeting held at the home ministry. Asking the officials to work with utmost sincerity to ensure sound law and order situation, Babar instructed them to hold the trials of the extortionists and toll collectors on the highways under the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act. He also reminded them of the coming Durgapuja and month of Ramadan, said a meeting source. He also gave them instructions to complete executive inquiry into all incidents of 'crossfire' before the government hands over power to the caretaker government. The DCs and SPs told the minister they are facing problems in disposing cases and could not properly conduct mobile court activities due to lack of magistrates. To stop extortion on the highways, the DCs and SPs asked the government to provide security during transportation of vegetables. They also asked for high-speed engine boats instead of speedboats in coastal areas. Babar said he discussed about price control of essentials, highway extortions, security in the coastal areas, food adulteration, extremism, smuggling and drugs. "I've asked them what problems they were facing and gave necessary solutions to the problems. They've also given several effective suggestions which we have accepted," he told reporters. Babar instructed the DCs and SPs to arrest the wanted, absconding accused and convicts and enforce laws more vigorously to ensure sound law and order situation. Asked about a previous government order to prepare a list of criminals, Babar said he is yet to get the list. Pointing out that the outlaws are resurfacing again in the south-western region, Babar instructed to reinstate the camps which have been withdrawn after anti-JMB operations. The government instructed the DCs and SPs to resume motivational meetings once in a week to make people aware of the outlaws and the militants.
