In 1971, Justice Chowdhury played a very significant role in mobilising world opinion in favour of the War of Liberation. He resigned as vice-chancellor of Dhaka University on March 15 in 1971 when Pakistani occupation forces fired on the unarmed students on the campus.

Later, he led the Bangladesh delegation to UN and he was head of Bangladesh Missions in London and New York.

He authored four books 'Probashe Muktijuddher Dinguli', 'Manobadhikar', 'Muslim Family Law in the English Courts' and 'Human Rights in the Twentieth Century'.
