Moudud for stern action against irregularities at pvt universities

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Moudud Ahmed yesterday urged the authorities concerned to take stern action against the private universities which are indulging in irregularities.

Emphasising the need for maintaining good working relations between the trustees and the vice-chancellors, he said both sides should look into all aspects before reaching an agreement to work together for avoiding any misunderstanding later.

Moudud was speaking at a seminar on "Inter-relation among executives and policy makers of the private universities" organised by monthly magazine 'Bishwabiddalaya Campus' at its office in the city.

University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof M Asaduzzaman, South East University VC Shamsher Ali, Gana Bishwabiddalaya Trustee Dr Zafarullah Chowdhury, State University VC Illias Dhami and Green University VC M Yusuf Ali also spoke on the occasion with the Campus Editor M Helal in the chair.

Referring to the huge potentials of the private universities in the country, Barrister Moudud said they should nurse the students who will take up the future leadership of the country. Private universities should give facilities to the poor but meritorious students, he added.

He said the private universities should be alert so that student and teacher politics cannot enter the campus.

Referring to students' movement in the public universities like Buet for deferring the date of examinations, Moudud said the students rather should fight for holding exam in due time.

"Student politics and hartals should be stopped in the greater national interest. Even laws can be enacted for this purpose through a consensus," he observed. Referring to recent crisis in some private universities, the law minister said all the universities should not be blamed for the irregularities of a few.

Emphasising the need for creating a campus environment in the private universities located in various busy spots in the city, Moudud said libraries can help create such environment and also improve student-teacher relationship.
