Saarc FMs tell Khaleda

Foreign Ministers of India, Nepal and Sri Lanka have termed Safta agreement reached in 13th Saarc Summit under the leadership of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia as a landmark achievement. The three FMs said the accord will immensely contribute towards boosting trade, commerce and economic cooperation bilaterally and regionally. Nepal Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister KP Sharma Oli, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera and Indian State Minister for External Affairs E Ahmed, made the remarks while they made separate courtesy call on Khaleda, also Saarc Chairperson, at her office yesterday. They all stressed further strengthening the South Asian regional forum during their meetings with her. E Ahmed said the decisions taken during Khaleda's recent visit to India made effective progress. Discussing bilateral matters, he briefly apprised the PM of developments in this regard, recalling the meeting of the joint boundary working group held in Dhaka recently. The situation in Lebanon also came up for review at the meeting and Khaleda mentioned Bangladesh's position against senseless attacks and killings in Lebanon. E Ahmed thanked Khaleda for condemning, condoling and expressing sympathy over recent terrorist blasts in Mumbai and also conveyed the Indian PM's greetings to her. Sharma Oli while meeting PM said Saarc Decade has already gone underway and the seven-nation forum achieved remarkable progress under her leadership. He stressed common initiatives under Saarc to fight poverty, unemployment and diseases. Samaraweera expressed his country's interest in boosting trade relations with Bangladesh, bilaterally as well as within the Safta framework. Samaraweera stressed re-establishing air-link between Dhaka and Colombo and thanked Khaleda for providing scope for training of Sri Lankan military officials in Bangladesh. He extended an invitation to Khaleda for visiting Sri Lanka and the PM accepted the invitation saying it would take place at a mutually convenient time. Samaraweera said Sri Lankan President would like to materialise his postponed visit to Bangladesh which was scheduled to take place last month. The PM said she was ready to welcome the Sri Lankan leader. Pakistan Foreign Minister Khurshid M Kasuri, Bhutanese Foreign Minister Lyonpo Khandu Wangebuk, Afghan Foreign Minister Dr Rangin Dadfar Spanta and the Maldives State Minister for Foreign Affairs Abdullah Shahid also call on Khaleda at Hotel Sheraton shortly after inauguration of the 27th session of the Saarc Council of Ministers.
