Uneasy calm prevails at Buet
DU Correspondent
The campus of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) was unusually calm yesterday after some days of turbulence due to demonstrations of students for deferral of examinations.Authorities declared the university closed sine die and directed the students to vacate the dormitories on Monday after a violent clash between the demonstrators and police on Sunday night. At least 30 people, including 18 students and 12 policemen, were injured in the clash. The authorities said the university would reopen in the shortest possible time after campus situation comes under control. However, a probe committee to identify the responsible persons for making the campus turbulent is yet to be formed. Director of Students' Welfare Prof Monowar Hossain said the process of forming the committee is under process. While talking to The Daily Star, some students expressed fear that the probe committee may identify some innocent students as responsible for the Sundays' incident. Bangladesh Abhibhabak Parishad, a platform of guardians of students studying at different universities and colleges, in a statement yesterday urged the authorities to reopen the university immediately. It said the unscheduled closure of the Buet is tarnishing its image abroad, mentioning that Buet witnessed unscheduled closure at least three times during the last 4 years. The Buet Teachers' Association yesterday condemned the students' 'ferocity' on the campus. It demanded exemplary punishment to the responsible students for vandalising teachers' houses and their cars. Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, a left leaning student body, demanded that the authorities reopen the campus and announce fresh schedule for exams immediately.
