5 bullet-hit as JCD factions clash at JU

At least five activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) suffered bullet injuries and 25 others including a teacher were injured in clashes between two factions of JCD at Jahangirnagar University (JU) last night.

Three of the five bullet-hit JCD men were identified as Nazim, Nur and Farhad. Names of the other two could not be known.

Assistant Proctor Mustofa Nazmul Mansoor, also assistant professor of the Department of Philosophy, received injuries to his leg during the clash.

The clash ensued after a scuffle between the followers of JCD JU unit President Parvez Mallick and General Secretary Nazmul Hasan Ovi, leaving at least five people injured near the university main gate around 7:30pm yesterday.

Following the university gate incident, at least 100 activists of Ovi faction around 8:30pm attacked AFM Kamal Uddin Hall, a dormitory dominated by Parvez faction. The attackers were armed with shotguns, revolvers, pistols and pipe guns and started firing at the dormitory. Activists of Parvez group also fired back from the dormitory.

Both the groups threw brickbats at each other during the skirmish injuring Assistant Proctor Mansoor. Teachers led by Proctor Prof Sayed Kamrul Ahsan tried to calm both the groups who took positions between the two dormitories.

"They beat up my activists in front of my own eyes near the university gate. Activists of Parvez attacked my activists first," Ovi claimed.

A large contingent of police has been deployed at the two dormitories to prevent further untoward incidents.

Both the factions have been flexing their muscles publicly on the campus since May to establish supremacy on the campus ahead of the formation of a new JCD committee. The new committee of JCD was supposed to be formed as the incumbent committee's tenure expired.
