231 Rab members punished so far
Babar tells JS


Since the formation of the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), 231 of its members have been punished for different offences until June 26 this year, parliament was told yesterday.

Rab was formed on March 26, 2004.

State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfuzzaman Babar gave the statistics replying to a question from BNP member Shamsuddin Ahmad (Mymensingh-6).

He said as on June 26 this year some 77 Rab members have been rewarded for performing their duty courageously, taking great risks.

Of them, 42 members were given BPM and PPM medals, 21 were rewarded with testimonials and 14 were awarded IGP's Exemplary Good Services Badge, Babar added.

He said on different occasions, Rab members were provided with cash prizes for their good work. Besides, Rab as an organisation was awarded Independence Award, 2006.

Babar said as on June 1 there were 71,290 prisoners in country's 67 prisons having a total capacity of holding 27,291 inmates.

Replying to a question of Awami League member from Gazipur-1 constituency, he said that among the prisoners 68,992 were males and 2,298 were females.

Babar said that Dhaka Central Jail accommodated the highest number of prisoners, some 8,111 of them, against its capacity of holding 2,682.

Chittagong Central Jail was holding 5,883 prisoners against its capacity of accommodating 1,507 inmates.
