Lady luck smiles on locals
Draw of The Daily Star-Rangs Toshiba World Cup Quiz Round 4

It took four rounds for The Daily Star-Rangs Toshiba World Cup Quiz to find a local winner as Sumon of Chittagong ran away with the first prize of a 21-inch Toshiba Bomba Flat TV.

But Sumon was not that lucky until Chittagong Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, chief guest of the round four draw at the Muslim Institute Hall on Tuesday, picked his name for the second time.

A 26-year-old service holder who lives at North Muradpur of the port city, Sumon's name had already been picked as one of the 10 fourth prize winners and it needed the organisers to receive a vote of confidence from a packed audience to declare him winner for the big one on the ground that his previous prize was much smaller.

In fact, luck rained on the Chittagonians on a rainy day as the guest of honours picked as many as nine winners from their own region. It all began when Safia Gazi Rahman, principal of Sunshine Grammar School and College, drew the first coupon of Kazi Abdul Ali for the 33rd prize -- a Toshin iron -- amidst huge cheers from the audience.

But the newspaper's Dhaka readers also had their share of luck as Zeenat Jahan Kakoli of Zinjira, Keranigonj and Quamruzzaman from Eastern Plaza, Hatirpool won the second and third prizes respectively.

Mayor Mohiuddin, in his speech, promised that he would take necessary steps for the restart of the traditional Mayor Gold Cup in the city where teams from other districts would also participate.

Presided over Mahfuz Anam, the Editor and Publisher of The Daily Star, the colourful function was also graced by Lt. Col. (retd) Muklesur Rahman, general manager of sponsors Rangs Industries Ltd, Shahed Asgar Chowdhury, general secretary of Chittagong Jila Krira Sangstha, Abul Momen, Resident Editor of the Prothom Alo in Chittagong, former national footballer Dilip Barua.

There were also instant prizes -- two Canon cameras and five Toshin irons -- for the audience who won them through a raffle draw.
