Conjoined twins in good state

The condition of the conjoined twins born at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Monday is improving with the doctors expressing hope that they may grow up normally.

Prof Kabirul Islam, head of the department of Paediatric Surgery, told The Daily Star yesterday that the twins are being fed through pipe and are better than the previous day.

The ultrasonography test of the newborns reveals that they are of different sexes having one liver, one rectum, two kidneys instead of four and one urinal bag instead of two. They, however, have separate brains, hearts and urinal tracts in a normal condition.

The twins, weighing four kilograms, have four hands and three legs with problems in one leg.

"We are now consulting the specialists of home and abroad and will probably decide next week on surgery if the twins could be separated or not," Prof Kabirul said.

Mother of the newborns Salma said they would accept any decision taken by the specialists for the betterment of the babies.

Coming to know of the birth of the rare conjoined twins, doctors of many countries have now been communicating with the DMCH, sources said.
