Garment worker killed in clash with hired cadres of owners

A garment worker was killed and 20 others were injured in clashes between hired cadres of owners and agitating employees at Damgora in Savar last night.

The dead was identified as Abu Bakkar, 20. He was a machine operator of Irish Fashion Limited.

Witnesses said agitated workers of Irish Fashion Limited took out a procession and staged demonstration at about 8:00pm demanding payment of their wages.

During the demonstration, some cadres hired by the factory owners swooped on the agitating employees with sticks and lethal weapons.

The workers then chased them, leading to a series of clashes.

Abu Bakkar, who was wounded seriously during the clash, died on the spot, witnesses said.

The inured employees were admitted to local clinics.

Huge contingent of police were deployed in the area to avert further clash.
