Fete de la Musique
Dance away the blues

In a fitting conclusion to the last day of Fete de la Musique at Alliance Francaise, riveting dances were presented by Kamrul Islam Nadim and his students, along with Majid Shekhaliev and his students as well as orphans organised by NGO 'Ma-er Anchol-e'.

The most plaudits were reserved for the children. Though the programme began late and viewers were diverted by soccer on TV, it was clear that western dances had made a clear inroad into the society's cultural scene.

Waltz, cha-ch-cha, tango and meringue, all were dealt with passion and dedication. The students had obviously practiced well. As the multi-coloured psychedelic lights overhead went on and off, the energetic dances captivated the audience. Suitably attired in hip hugging festive skirts, Nadim's students, Riyaya, Sophie, Mawa, Nilufer, Abir and Bikrom, along with their leader Nadim performed energetic pieces. Nadim is a well-known name in the dance circuit; he teaches at the Russian Cultural Centre, Nordic Club, American International School, Dhaka along with South Breeze school. Come August 6 he will teach dance at the British High Commission Club as well.

Majid's group, attired in black, also delighted the audience. They presented a short skit, titled Aage aage class ek schooler which combined drama and dance. The nine-member team also performed salsa and waltz. Majid is a Russian who teaches at Alliance Francaise and South Avenue club. He has been in the city for the last seven years. He has been a choreographer back home in Russia for about 20 years His performances have taken him to European cities such as London, Paris, and Rome. "People like to learn salsa. This dance form has a catchy beat and vigorous footsteps," says Majid. The talented dancer has plans to fuse European folk dance with that of Bangladesh and shortly set up a group that will perform regularly.

The young ones excelled as hip hop dancers. Their verve and confidence fetched applause from an enthusiastic audience.
