Double Murder
Husband gets death, wife life term in Rajshahi


A man was sentenced to death and his wife to life term by a court in a double murder case here in Rajshahi yesterday.

Additional District and Session Judge-3 Zebunnessa found the convicts guilty under section 302/34 of BPC and pronounced the judgement in a crowded courtroom.

The convicts are Tiarul Islam, 45, and his first wife Moyura Begum, 35, of Kharchaka village under Godagari upazila of Rajshahi district.

The court also sentenced Tiarul to suffer seven years RI and fined Tk 5,000 will his wife to suffer another three years in jail and fined Tk 3,000.

It is learned that the convicts Tiarul and Moyura strangulated the second wife of Tiarul Shaokat Ara, 25, and her daughter Topy, 7, on April 9, 2002 to death as sequel to the long-standing family feud.

Subsequently, they set fire to the house along with the bodies to conceal the murder incident.

Victim's elder brother Rafiqul Islam lodged a case with Godagari police station on the following morning.

The trial court examined 17 prosecution witnesses and other relevant evidences during the trial.
