LGRD ministry to implement RMP from today
After 23 years of successful implementation of the Rural Maintenance Programme (RMP), CARE Bangladesh handed over implementation responsibilities of the programme to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development & Cooperatives on Thursday, says a press release.

Steve Wallace, country director of CARE Bangladesh, formally handed over a note to SM Jahrul Islam, secretary of the Local Government Division, at the Project Steering Committee meeting held at the Secretariat.

Jacob Thoppil of Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Anthony Goodwin of European Commission and government officials were present at the meeting.

The LGRD ministry will implement the programme from today. The RMP was jointly funded by the government, Canadian international Development Agency (CIDA) and European Commission (EC) till handing over the programme.

Speaking at the function, Steve Wallace said CARE feels proud for successful implementation of the programme. He recalled supports from the government and donor agencies in this regard.

He also hoped that the government would eradicate poverty through successful implementation of the programme in future.

Under the programme, 42,000 destitute women maintained 84,000 km earthen road in 4,200 unions of 61 districts throughout the year. Regular maintenance of rural roads inflicted a positive impact on movement of goods and services, contributing to improvement of the rural economy.
