Govt conspiring to revive presidential system: Hasina

Opposition Leader Sheikh Hasina yesterday said the BNP-Jamaat alliance government is hatching a new conspiracy to switch over to presidential form of government by bringing amendment to the constitution.

"The alliance government is playing a new game with the country's presidential office and Jatiya Sangsad as part of its evil design, as they know the people will reject them in the next national elections," she said.

Hasina, also the Awami League president, was addressing a view exchange meeting at her Dhanmondi office with the party's grassroots-level leaders from Barisal, Jhalakathi and Bhola districts under Barisal Division.

She discussed with them the prevailing political situation in their constituencies, party position, prospective party candidates for the forthcoming elections, and the ongoing anti-government agitation.

The people will not vote for the coalition government for the second time, Hasina said, adding, "They [alliance government] could assume power through massive rigging in the 2001 polls, but this time people are forewarned about their evil design."

She said after assuming power in 2001 the 'godfathers' of the BNP-Jamaat alliance, led by Mujibur Rahman Sarwar and Zahiruddin Swapan, unleashed torture on the AL leaders and activists and the minority community forcing them to flee their homes.

"The alliance government has been violating the Rules of Procedure (of parliament) and the Constitution one after another while it scored a record in punishment transfer, retrenchment, harassment, making OSD and contract basis appointment of officials during its tenure," the AL chief said.

Referring to the new national budget, she said the block allocation in the budget is not for the people's welfare, but for looting by the ministers, MPs and ruling party men.

The huge amount of public money that the ruling party men had looted will be utilised to bribe the voters in the ensuing parliamentary polls, she said, adding, "But the people are waiting to give appropriate reply to the alliance government in the next polls."

Hasina accused the alliance government of playing with the voter list, even by violating the orders of the High Court and the Supreme Court. "And now they have initiated a new game with the Presidency," she said.

"After coming to power through vote stealing and conspiracies, Khaleda Zia removed a president of her choice, Prof Badruddoza Chowdhury, who had come up with slanderous propaganda against our party in the 2001 polls."

"She [Khaleda Zia] then appointed 100 per cent faithful Prof Iajuddin Ahmed as the president, but now she cannot believe him."

The Speaker is not leaving the charge of president, which is a direct violation of the constitution, she said.

Urging the party leaders and workers to get united for a massive movement to save the nation from the looters and criminals, the AL president told them to rise above self-interest and stand by the people.

The AL president yesterday met with 26 organisational units of Barisal City, and Barisal, Jhalakati and Bhola districts that cover 12 parliamentary constituencies.

Most of the grassroots leaders demanded that the AL chief constitute full-fledged committees after resolving the intra-party conflicts.
