The government is increa-sing the number of police stations in phases. At present there are 28 police stations in the city. The proposed 12 new police stations may start functioning by this month, sources said. "The jurisdiction area of DMP will not be expanded. The new police stations will be created splitting the existing area of the metropolis. The jurisdiction area of each police station will become smaller when the new stations will start functioning. It will help the police to work more effici-ently," DMP Commissioner SM Mizanur Rahman told Star City. The proposed new police stations are Jatrabari, Tejgaon Shilpanchal (industrial area), Shahbagh, Uttarkhan, Dakkh-inkhan, Gendaria, Bangshal, Kalabagan, Chawkbazar, Darussalam, Rampura and Kadamtali. Jatrabari police station will be formed splitting Demra PS, Tejgaon Shilpanchal splitting Tejgaon PS, Shahbagh splitting Ramna PS, Uttarkhan and Dakkhinkhan splitting Uttara PS, Gendaria splitting Sutrapur PS, Bangshal splitting Kotwali PS, Kalabagan splitting Dhanmondi PS, Chawkbazar splitting Lalbagh PS, Daruss-alam splitting Mirpur PS, Rampura splitting Khilgaon PS and Kadamtali splitting Shyampur PS. Six of the new police stations will be set up on government property while the rest will be housed in rented buildings. Each of the new police stations will start functioning with 14 SIs, 11 ASIs and 50 constables under an officer-in-charge (OC). The DMP commissioner said police manpower should be increased in the capital due to its high density of population. In Dhaka one policeman is there for every 540 people while in entire Bangladesh the ratio is 1:1300.
