Arrest warrant against Benazir, spouse

A Pakistani court has issued arrest warrants against former prime minister Benazir Bhutto and her spouse for not responding to its summons in connection with submitting a false statement of assets, a day after she met deposed premier Nawaz Sharif in Dubai to firm up plans to return home.

Judge Rafi-uz Zaman of the Islamabad District and Sessions Court issued arrest warrants against the self-exiled former prime minister and her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, on the grounds that they failed to respond to its summons.

The court directed the interior ministry to contact the Interpol for the arrest of Benazir and her husband and that they must be produced before it on July 3.

The court order came a day after Benazir Bhutto met Sharif, the exiled Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) leader, in Dubai to firm up plans to return home to put up a joint fight against the military-backed ruling alliance in next year's elections.

Under the rules, all Pakistani parliamentarians are bound to submit statements of their assets to the election commission.

During the meeting, Benazir has said that her differences with Sharif were now a thing of the past and they were now working together for a democratic and prosperous Pakistan.

"My differences with Mian Nawaz Sharif are part of the past. Now we are together for a democratic and a prosperous Pakistan. We are not looking back, we are looking ahead," she said.

She also refuted suggestions that the PPP and PML-N would set aside the charter if they came to power.

"The charter will be acted upon in every circumstances," she said.

Benazir met with Nawaz Sharif in Dubai and held talks on the future course of action in their agitation against President General Pervez Musharraf described the Charter of Democracy as indispensable to Pakistan's political future.
