Failure of democracy!
Md. Aminul Hoque, Khalishpur R/A, Khulna
Recently, the Chief Justice commented at a seminar that corruption has reached such a point where it has become an acceptable behaviour or norm. In the same seminar, the ACC chairman commented that corruption takes place at the highest levels of political authority. The government came to power through elections with more than two-thirds majority in the parliament. This government has done some good things but took no sincere or honest steps to eliminate or reduce corruption. They have formed the Anti-Corruption Commission but has done it in a way that it cannot become effective. BNP founder Ziaur Rahman was widely accepted and respected by the people for his unique quality of HONESTY. But the present BNP is a different proposition. Our country is now known worldwide as the most corrupt nation on earth. But it seems the government does not feel uneasy with this title. I understand if we can get rid of this curse i.e. corruption, then other desirable things will come automatically. But with the conventional democratic process where politicians are manipulating everything in their favour, it is not easy to change the situation. The government is always busy & spending most of its energy & time encountering the opposition. On the other hand, the opposition party having no other job is always busy taking actions to ensure that the government cannot succeed in any way. To the politicians who are in government as well as in opposition, the people are only important during election time and national interest is always a forgotten item. The country is burning and the people are bleeding but the government & opposition are engaged in the blame game. The two top leaders of the two big political parties do not see each other's face. What people can expect from them? What is the way out for us, the general people? Can we think of measures like the following? 1. Let the next caretaker government with an extended team of about 30 advisers govern the country for the next three years and let the politicians take rest. 2. At the end of that period the caretaker government & a newly formed Election Commission will hold an election without any political party. The EC will collect & select the names of the interested individuals for the parliamentary election, circulate credentials of the selected candidates in the respective constituencies and ask the people to vote for the most honest persons. No election campaign by the candidates themselves will be allowed. The parliament will then sit and select a prime minister and 40 cabinet ministers / state ministers for the next government which will replace the caretaker government once and for all. This elected non-party government can take care of the next parliamentary election in the same manner. Though I am not an expert on the issue, I have been suffering because of the political system that is in place now. We need a change, please come forward with constructive proposals.
