Natural disasters in Indonesia
Rafiqul Islam Rime, Agrabad, Chittagong
The recent earthquake in Indonesia that claimed about 10,000 lives has left the country in dire straits.Thousands of people are under threat as the survivors are facing the severe chill of the rain and other difficulties. The UN and many countries have generously extended their support to the suffering humanity. At this crucial juncture, I urge all the rich countries to come forward to the rescue of the humanity in distress. This tragic phenomenon reminds us of the destructive tsunami that wreaked havoc. At this point, the earthquake prone countries in Asia should get united to raise awareness among the people and train them on pre-emptive measures/preparedness. And the organisations like the Saarc, OIC and other international bodies should play a more active role in this regard. We, the mortals, are in a very vulnerable position, as we cannot do anything against this sort of natural disasters though we've stepped into the moon. It's indeed an irony--- the way you take it.
