SUST crisis likely to ease
New treasurer to join today

With joining of the newly appointed treasurer today, the crisis-stricken Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) may return to normalcy after about three weeks, campus sources expect.

Prof Shamsul Huda was appointed treasurer two weeks ago. He is expected to join today, Registrar Jamil Ahmed Chowdhury told The Daily Star yesterday.

Prof Huda went on retirement in 1995 after serving as principal of Sylhet Government College.

An administrative vacuum has been prevailing in the university since resignation of VC Prof Musleh Uddin Ahmed on May 14 amid agitation by students following the death of a fellow student in police firing.

The varsity was closed sine die on May 13 in the wake of students' agitation. The crisis deepened as the VC left the campus without handing over charges to any body. The VC himself was shouldering the responsibilities of Pro-VC and the Treasurer, since the posts were vacant for long.

Musleh Uddin Ahmed was a professor at the department of Public Administration in Dhaka University before joining the SUST as Pro-VC in 2002. Later, on April 27, 2003, he was made VC as Prof Md. Shafiqur Rahamn, a senior professor of the department of Physics resigned in the face of agitation by teachers and employees.

Prof Rahman went back to his former post in Dhaka University. SUST Treasurer Prof MA Aziz went on retirement in 2002, handing over charges to the VC.
