Teachers demand removal of director

Teachers of the Institute of Social Welfare and Research, Dhaka University (DU), yesterday demanded removal of the director of the institute, blaming him for various irregularities and financial anomalies.In a memorandum submitted to Vice Chancellor Prof SMA Faiz yesterday, they brought a number of allegations against the director, Prof ASM Atiqur Rahman, and urged the authorities to take appropriate steps in this regard within next seven days. At an urgent meeting on June 1, the teachers decided that they would not cooperate with the present director, sources said. The teachers who signed the memorandum are Prof Dr Abdul Hakim Sarker, Prof Dr Md Abu Taher, Prof Syeda Firoza Begum, Prof Dr Mohammad Samad, Prof Dr Md Nurul Islam, Tahmina Akhtar, Tania Rahman, Mohammad Rezaul Karim, Dr Mahbuba Sultana, Dr Md Golam Azam, Md Shaheen Khan, Sheikh Touhidul Islam, Md Rabiul Islam and Fazle Khoda. In the memorandum, the teachers brought various allegations including corruption, irregularities and autocratic attitude. On April 1 this year, five senior teachers of the institute had urged the authorities to take action against the director for financial and administrative irregularities in its evening master's programme and some other irregularities at the institute. Talking to The Daily Star, Prof Atiqur Rahman said he did not know why the teachers want his removal. He also dismissed the allegations of irregularities. "I urge the university authorities to investigate whether there is any irregularities in the institute," he said. When contacted, VC Prof SMA Faiz said that he is yet to go through the memorandum. However, he would sit with the teachers and director of the institute to discuss the matter, he added.
