Akij Bidi Factory shut down

Akij Bidi Factory in Jessore was shut down yesterday following a clash over the retrenchment of a worker.

Sources said Anwar Hossain, a worker, was fired for beating Habibur Rahman, a checker, in the factory.

Being agitated over the issue, workers under the leadership of Anwar ransacked the doors and windows of the factories and looted Bidis worth Tk 3 lakh.

Witnesses said the agitating workers beat Cashier Khalilur Rahman, Checker Ziaur Rahman and Guard Ayub Hossain mercilessly.

They were given first aid at a local hospital.

Admitting the clash, factory Manager Abu Taher said the authorities declared the factory closed for an indefinite period.

They have also filed a case with Jhikorgachha Police Station for looting and vandalising within the factory compound.

Earlier, the factory witnessed an unrest on May 29 over an increase of Tk 1 for binding bidis.
