Teachers Employees' United Alliance, a platform of private schools, colleges and madrasas teachers and employees, placed the demands at a press conference at the Reporters Unity in the city yesterday.

Prof M Shariful Islam, president of the alliance, read out a written statement on the occasion.

"If we are equal in terms of educational qualifications, then we must deserve the equal facilities granted by the government," Shariful dmanded.

Shariful alleged that although they represent 98 per cent of the education sector, they receive only 15 per cent professional facilities from the treasury of the state.

Their other demands include equal salary of the government teachers and employees as per the new national pay scale, provision of housing and medical allowances, annual increment and two full festival allowances and providing training for the teachers to ensure quality education.

They called upon the government to implement the Unesco-ILO convention of 1966 related with the status of teachers.

They threatened to announce tougher programme at a rally of the alliance on June 10 if their demands are not met.

Prof Rafika Afroze, Nazrul Islam, Muhammad Jahangir Khan and other leaders were present at the briefing.
