3 officials of DEPZ removed

The government last night relieved three Dhaka Export Processing Zone (DEZP) officials of duty for their negligence during workers' agitation in the zone.

Besides, a committee was formed with secretary of the Local Government Division SM Zahirul Islam to probe the incidents in DEPZ.

"Some officials of the DEZP have shown irresponsibility in maintaining good relations between the owners and workers," said a joint statement issued by Commerce Minister Hafizuddin Ahmed and State Minister for Labour and Employment Aman Ullah Aman.

The DEPZ officials relieved of their duty are General Manager Kamal Akhter, Security Officer Rezaul Karim and Industrial Relations Officer KM Ahsanullah.

In the statement, the ministers said bargaining and movements are usual for realising demands in any industry between the owners and workers.

"But destruction of mills and factories in the name of workers' movement is not acceptable in anyway," they said.

They said government to this effect, has signed an agreement after having talks with the leaders of owners and workers and all steps have been taken for its implementation.

"It is hoped that the government, owners and the workers would work jointly to make Bangladesh garment industry a competitive one in the world market."
