Govt planning polls fixing in 100 seats
Hasina tells party men
Unb, Dhaka
Opposition leader Sheikh Hasina has alleged that the BNP-Jamaat coalition has been pursuing an evil design of election engineering, targeting 100 seats. "They will try to rig the next polls, spending a huge amount of black money," she told a group of grassroots level AL leaders at the party's Dhanmondi office yesterday. The AL president was exchanging views with the local level leaders from Munshiganj, Manikganj and Narayanganj districts on the prevailing political situation, the party's preparations for the coming election as well as the ongoing anti-government agitation. Presidents and general secretaries of three districts, 24 upazila and pourasabha units exchanged views with Hasina in a series of meetings. The grassroots level AL leaders also returned a party questionnaire filled in with answers to Hasina. The questionnaire, earlier supplied to them, included queries with regard to AL position at grassroots level. "Take preparations for the coming election and the anti-government movement that will continue simultaneously, Hasina asked her partymen. She also urged them to make the 14-party combine's "Dhaka siege" on June 11 a success. She posed a question as to how the two JMB leaders, who were awarded death sentence for killing two judges, have been accommodated in a sub-jail at Shilpakala Academy instead of throwing them into condemned cells. "The alliance government is running the country through using arms, black money and terrorists.. but they can't escape public wrath as the people have already rejected them for their misdead," the AL chief said. Hasina reiterated her demand for immediate resignation of the chief election commissioner and the two other commissioners, saying that a credible election is not possible under the supervision of this "controversial" CEC and the two commissioners. She suggested constituting an independent election commission on the basis of consensus of all the political to ensure free, fair and credible polls. The AL chief said if she returns to power she will strengthen the rural economy, control prices of essentials, make the country self-sufficient in food, increase power supply and reopen the community health care centers. The grassroots level leaders presented an elaborate picture of the organisational and political conditions in their areas and Hasina gave them a patient hearing for more than six hours. The AL chief will meet local level leaders from Tangail, Gazipur and Narsingdi today.
