Exhibition
Memories of earthy colours
Fayza Haq
Kamrul Islam Nadim, who is known in the city as a modern dance instructor, is having his solo exhibition of paintings and sketches at the Nordic Club. His teacher, Shishir Bhattacharya, commenting on his work said," It's a pity that he has dropped his exams this year. But his exhibition is a fine one . His importance on human figures is admirable. His experimental phase of his compositions is promising and the way he is concentrating on human figures says he can go a long way if he concentrates on his work. His use of red and blue has been done carefully and there is sequence in his use of figures too." One of his paintings is an oil on canvas. This presents a realistic view of the Fine Arts Institute DU. The season is a winter morning. This brings in many branches of trees and leaves on the ground. He plays with perspective and light and shade. Another one is a figure composition which brings in different expressions . Some of the people here are seated and some standing. The work is from memory. The artist has tried to bring in the different movement and expressions of daily life. This is in pulsating browns, greens and blacks. "We find these earthy colours aplenty in our country," Nadim says. Another work brings in some standing and reclining models , This is in greens, blacks and background of red. Crayon and paints have been used here. One of the paintings introduces the colours and vibrancy of folk festival in our villages. It has dancing figures , drums, other musical instruments and rows of coloured, fluttering buntings at the back. It has a lot of orange and black in the colour composition. In another one of the same series has people embracing each other , confiding in each other, trying to buy and sell and so go about their pleasures in a festive folk fair. This is in green, orange and yellow. "These hues are typical of our Bangali festivals such as Pohila Boishak " says Nadim. Another acrylic is done on 6 feet x 4 feet canvas and is done from memory. It is based on his memory of trees grass and grottos of the institution where he studies and which hark back to so many of his pleasant experiences. The ground is done in deep red and the water in contrasting pulsating blue. "Here I have experimented with shape, form and colours," says Nadim," I've given it a realistic set up but have played with colours of imagination. Another painting plays with realistic perspective and hues taken from dreams and imagination. The exhibition is imaginative and thought provoking. The display is on till June 10.
