50 injured in AL-BNP clash in Comilla

At least 50 people were injured in a clash between BNP and Awami League workers at Damkandi village in Titas upazila yesterday over holding programmes at the same venue and time.Sources said local AL recently called a meeting of party workers at Damkandi Govt Primary School ground for 3:00pm while Jubo Dal announced another meeting at the same venue and captured the field before the AL's programme. Tension escalated when AL workers started assembling there and both the groups brought out processions. At one stage, witnesses said, Jubo Dal activists attacked the AL procession, led by Major General (retd) Subed Ali Bhuiyan, when the AL men entered Damkandi Bazar to hold their scheduled meeting at the school ground, triggering the clash. Around 29 AL men and 21 BNP workers were injured in the clash and they were taken to different hospitals in Comilla and Dhaka. Later, the angry AL men damaged the Bhitakandi Union BNP office and held their scheduled meeting at the primary school ground.
