Road accidents claim eleven lives
College teacher, his son among victims


Eleven people including a professor and his son were killed in separate road accidents across the country yesterday and on Thursday.

Staff Correspondent in Chittagong reports: A college teacher along with his son was killed and his wife, also a college teacher, was injured in a tragic road accident at Anowara upazila in the district yesterday.

The victim teacher identified as Chowdhury Anwarul Karim, 45, was an assistant professor of Chittagong Government Women College while his son, 11, was identified as Chowdhury Hasin Ishtiaq Dwipan. Professor Anwarul's injured wife Zaheda Sultana, an assistant professor of Botany department of Chittagong Government College, was undergoing treatment at a clinic at the city's OR Nizam Road area.

According to sources, the professor along with wife, one son and domestic help was going to his in-laws' house at Anowara when a speeding passenger minibus collided head-on with their CNG auto-rickshaw on Anowara-CUFL Sarak (road) near Kafco at noon.

In the accident Professor Anwarul was killed on the spot while his wife Professor Zaheda and school-going son Dwipan received injuries.

Dwipan died on way to local health complex.

Professor Zaheda was rushed to Anowara Upazila Health Complex and later, on deterioration of condition was shifted to a clinic in the city, sources said.

Professor Anwarul was the second son of late politician, academician and social worker Abul Hayat Chowdhury of Betagi under Rangunia upazila of the district.

The first namaz-e-janaza of Professor Anwarul and his son will be held at the city's Parade ground at 10:00am today.

They will be buried at their village graveyard at Betagi in Rangunia after the second namaz-e-janaza after Zuhr prayers, said the sources.

Our correspondent from Rangpur adds: Eight people were killed and 25 others injured, seven of them critically, in three separate road accidents in the district yesterday.

An accident occurred at Boiragiganj under Mithapukur upazila at around 5:00am yesterday killing five people and injuring 20 others.

Police and eyewitnesses said the Thakurgaon bound GR Paribohon, a passenger bus from Dhaka, collided head on with a Bogra bound truck laden with stone near Boiragiganj

Nazma Khatun, 25, Anwara, 20, and an unidentified women, 27, all passengers of the bus died on the spot while Morjina, 50, and Abdul Gafur, 40, succumbed to their injuries after they had been taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Among the injured, condition of two were stated to be critical.

Another accident took place on Dinajpur-Rangpur highway at Paglapeer under Rangpur sadar upazila at around 5:30am yesterday that left two passengers of a microbus dead.

An unidentified Rangpur bound bus rammed the microbus at Paglapeer.

Rafiqul Islam, 70, and Momin, 50, succumbed to their injuries on their way to RMCH while the rest of the passengers were hospitalised at RMCH in critical condition.

Meanwhile, Moni, 8, was run over by a Rangpur bound bus at Pirgachha at 8:30pm on Thursday when she was crossing the road.

BDNEWS adds: A person was killed and ten others were injured in a road accident on Dhaka-Maowa highway in Munshiganj yesterday.

Sources said a Dhaka-bound bus of Ilish Paribahan fell into a roadside ditch as the driver lost his control over the steering at Kamargaon of Srinagar upazila.

Arman, the driver of the bus, died on the spot.
