US to pursue UN resolution against Myanmar

The United States said Wednesday it would pursue an unprecedented UN Security Council resolution calling on Myanmar's military junta to change its alleged repressive policies.

No one has pushed for a resolution on Myanmar at the council so far despite international uproar in the past nearly two decades over alleged human rights abuses by the military rulers in the southeast Asian state.

The US State Department said after a rare Security Council briefing on Myanmar Wednesday that Washington "intends to pursue" such a resolution that would "underscore the international community's concerns about the situation" there.

The concerns included the "unjustifiable detention" of Myanmar's democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi, which was extended by the junta by another year at the weekend, said department spokesman Sean McCormack.

"The international community must continue pressing the Burmese regime to change its policies," he said, referring to Burma, the previous name of Myanmar.
