ITI World Congress held in Manila
The 31st World Congress of the International Theatre Institute (ITI) concluded on May 28 in Manila, Philippines. Koichiro Matsuura, director general of UNESCO inaugurated the Congress in a colourful programme, says a press release.

A 14-member Bangladesh delegation led by Bangladesh ITI President, Ramendu Majumdar participated in the Congress and Theatre Olympics of the Nations festival.

A leaders' forum was held on the opening day on the theme 'Ancestral Roots to the New Artistic Routs of Expression: Mobilising Cultural Diversity to Achieve the UN Millennium development Goals'. Presided over by UNESCO Director General, the participants in the forum included ASEAN secretary general Ong Keng Yong, Minister in the Presidency of the Republic of South Africa Dr Essop Goolma Pahad and UNESCO Special Envoy and noted Bangladeshi designer Bibi Russel.

Dhaka Theatre staged Binodini on May 24 in the theatre festival. Directed by Nasiruddin Yousuff and performed by Shimul Yousuff, the play enthralled the audience from different countries. Selected theatre schools also had their workshops simultaneously.

Manfred Beilharz of Germany was re-elected the President, Ramendu Majumdar of Bangladesh and Jean Pierre Guingane were elected the Vice Presidents of the Worldwide Executive Council of ITI.

In the other permanent committee elections Mofidul Hoque was elected President of Communication Committee, Liaquat Ali Lucky was elected Vice President of Music Theatre Committee, Jhuna Chowdhury was elected Vice president of Dramatic Theatre Committee. Nasiruddin Yousuff was elected Board Member of CIDC, professor Shafi Ahmed Board Member of Theatre Education Committee and Shibli Mohammad Board Member of International Dance Committee for next two years.

On May 22, President of Philippines, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo hosted a dinner at the Presidential Palace in honour of the UNESCO DG and visiting distinguished theatre personalities.

Over 300 dlegates from 65 countries attended the Congress. The Bangladesh ITI delegation included Ramendu Majumdar, Nasiruddin Yousuff, Mofidul Hoque, Shafi Ahmed, Liaquat Ali Lucky, Jhuna Chowdhury, Ahmed Iqbal Haider and Saimon Zakaria while the Dhaka Theatre group included Shimul Yousuff, Ishrat Nishat and others.
