Future of our politics

The activities of the two major political parties of the country over the past fifteen years have aptly demonstrated that this country is just not fit for Westminster type parliamentary democracy. Even after fifteen years of reintroduction of parliamentary democracy, we still do not have a functional parliament because we have still not learnt to accept defeat gracefully and congratulate the winner, a practice that is very common in countries that practise democracy. In this impoverished country the winner takes all, lock, stock and barrel.

In the past fifteen years, there has not been any effort from any quarter to strengthen democracy by strengthening the democratic and electoral institutions. Our political parties are practising the nineteenth and twentieth century politics in this twenty first century, which is an absurd idea. Our politicians are more interested in glorifying their late leaders who are not in a position to contribute anything to the development of the nation.

Our politicians must look to the future and forget the past and then only can we survive in this highly competitive world.
