Bangladesh getting isolated?
SN Mamoon, Dhaka
Bangladesh is increasingly becoming isolated from the mainstream of economic activities of South and South-east Asia. India is building a sea- port in Myanmar at a cost of $100 million for transportation of goods to 'seven sister' states. It may construct a gas pipeline bypassing Bangladesh for transporting gas from Myanmar to India. China is also building infrastructure in its part in the north of Sikkim to facilitate trade with India. Old enemies are becoming friends for pragmatic purposes. Our government did not agree to Myanmar-Bangladesh- India gas pipeline. It also did not sign the Asian Highway treaty. Bangladesh is always on the side of the losers. In the era of globalisation and obvious economic benefits, our 'wise' government is perennially stuck up in the 'Indian juju' syndrome. It prefers not to see the realities and peoples' benefits. Very soon we will be totally isolated and by-passed for any economic activity. We don't know when our government will rise up from the slumber.
