Polytech student gets 30 yrs' RI for keeping heroin

A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced a student of Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute to 30 years' rigorous imprisonment for possessing 500 grams of heroin in October last year.Judge Mohammad Aman Ullah of the Fifth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court handed down the sentence in presence of the convict Sarwar Hossain alias Roni, 22, of Charghat in Rajshahi district. Earlier, the prosecution and the defence completed their arguments and the court recorded statements of 13 prosecution witnesses. According to the prosecution, a team of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) led by Deputy Additional Director (DAD) of Rab-3 raided the house of one Zahur Uddin Matbar in the city's South Mathertek at about 10:45pm on October 29 last year, arrested Roni from there and seized 500 grams of heroin twisted in a bag from his possession. Later, the Rab filed a case under the Narcotics Control Act with Sabujbagh Police Station the next day in this connection. The investigation officer pressed charges against Roni on November 27 the same year. Assistant Public Prosecutor Mohammad Farid Halder appeared for the state while advocates Gayendra Biswas, Mosharraf Hossain and Abu Abdullah defended the accused.
