Patients suffer as SSMCH interns go on strike

Interns of Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital went on an indefinite strike yesterday to realise their two-point demand leaving hundreds of patients to suffer.

Lack of residential facilities and unpaid salaries for five months forced the interns to go for strike, the interns said.

As the interns refrained from work and were busy demonstrating, hundreds of patients at the hospital complained they could not find any doctors.

The interns, in a meeting on the hospital premises yesterday at noon, said they were suffering from inadequate residential facilities. They claimed doctors who have completed their internship two to five years ago still occupy most of the 80 beds reserved for interns.

Leaders of the Intern Doctors' Association, Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital, said they have not received their salaries for the last five months. Demanding immediate release of their salaries they also said the authorities must arrange for payments of their salaries during the first five days of each month.

They said if the authorities failed to meet their demands they would stage a token hunger strike tomorrow.
