IU staffs block roads for salary
Star Report
Third and fourth-class employees of Kushtia Islamic University (IU) supported by a large number of people of two unions adjacent to the university yesterday barricaded the nearby road demanding payment of their salary for May and immediate removal of the university vice-chancellor.The programme disrupted traffic on Kushtia-Khulna highway for about an hour. At a rally at the university's main gate, university employees association leaders held 'covert roles' of two ruling party lawmakers of Kushtia responsible for the present stalemate at the university. They said ruling party lawmakers Sayeed Mehdi Ahmed Rumi of Kushtia-4 (Kumarkhali-Khoksa) and Sahidul Islam of Kushtia-2 (Mirpur-Bheramara) incited the local BNP and its student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) against the vice-chancellor as he failed to give jobs as per their demand. Consequently, the JCD men started a series of violent activities and vowed to continue massive agitation till their demands were met, they said. The employees demanded immediate steps for payment of their salaries for May. A syndicate meeting on May 18 approved appointment of 88 people including six officials and 82 third and fourth class employees at the university. All of the appointees are adherents of JCD and Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), student wings of ruling BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, while some of them have records of crimes including murder, sources in the university said. But the JCD men got angry, as their demand for at least 200 posts was not met, sources said. In the face of violent activities, the university authorities declared closure of the university till June 10 and asked the students to leave the halls. Vice-chancellor Rafiqul Islam, who left the campus soon after the syndicate meeting on May 18, is yet to attend his office. The university authorities are facing problems about taking any decision, as the vice-chancellor did not hand over charge to anybody when he left the campus on May 18.
