JCD leader shot over drug trade at DU
DU Correspondent
A Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader of Salimullah Hall of Dhaka University (DU) yesterday received bullet injuries allegedly over a feud between two phensidyle syndicates on the campus.Mahbub Masud Shanto, an MA student of Pali and Sanskrit, received one bullet in his waist and another in upper knee at around 6:45am. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). Shanto told journalists at DMCH that Sajal and Jyoti shot him while he was returning hall after breakfast. He said hall unit JCD leader Adnan Alam Khan Babu directed Sajal and Jyoti to shoot him over a feud between them. He however did not elaborate about the feud. Sajal, a JCD activist of Jagannath Hall, and Jyoti, an activist of Lalbagh thana unit, allegedly deal in phensidyle on the campus. Sources said Shanto and some of his friends had been conducting illegal phensidyle business on the campus under alleged patronisation of Sergeant Anwar of Ramna Police Station. But Anwar stopped patronising Shanto and his friends owing to a feud centring money. Recently, he promoted another phensidyle business syndicate of Babu and some other JCD leaders, sources added. Getting angry with the new syndicate, Shanto and his friends were informing police about the business of new syndicate. When contacted, Anwar denied the allegation saying that he did not have any involvement with this kind of syndicate. He said some of his foes might spread out false information against him to tarnish his image. Officer-in-Charge of Ramna Police Station Mahbubur Rahman said he did not hear any allegation against Anwar regarding phensidyle dealings. Hasan Mamun, president of DU unit JCD, told The Daily Star that the incident is an isolated event. He, however, said if any JCD leader or activist is found involved in the incident, he would be punished.
