Rights activists demand action against culprits

Seven human rights and development organisations yesterday demanded punishment to those responsible for the attacks on indigenous people and rape of two girls at Maizzchhari in Khagrachhari in April.They also called on the government to take effective steps to ensure safety of the victims and pay compensation to them. They placed their demands at a press conference in the city while presenting a report of an investigation into the incidents of clashes between the indigenous people and Bengali-speaking people that took place on April 3. The organisations conducted the investigation from April 7 to 11. They are Ain O Shalish Kendra, Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST), Nijera Kori, ALRD, Bangladesh Bar Council, Bangladesh National Women Lawyers' Association (BNWLA) and Bangladesh Mahila Parishad. Presenting the report, the human rights activists said 70 families of ethnic community had been living at a school building after the attack and they were not returning to their homes in fear of further attacks. Their houses were looted during the attack. Thirty indigenous people were injured, two girls were allegedly raped and nearly 100 houses were ransacked and some houses were set on fire during the clashes. Medical examinations of the two rape victims were conducted 48 hours after the incident and the police also refused to register a case in this regard, said Sultana Kamal, executive director of Ain o Salish Kendra. According to indigenous people, the Bengali-speaking people launched the attacks mainly to grab their lands, the report said. The rights activists called for making the land commission active in order to resolve land disputes in the CHT. They also demanded that the local administration should ensure security of indigenous people. They also called for recovering the lands of indigenous people, which were occupied by Bengali-speaking people. Bengali-speaking people should also be rehabilitated in other areas in order to ensure a congenial atmosphere, they added. Taslimur Rahman, executive director of BLAST, Khushi Kabir of Nijera Kori, Shamsul Huda of ALRD and Salma Ali of BNWLA were present at the press briefing.
