Tigers turn soccer pundits

With the eagerly anticipated football World Cup just days away and the world abuzz with the greatest show on earth, the Bangladesh cricketers could not stay away from the soccer frenzy.

Prompted by a TV reporter, the Tigers engaged in a lively discussion among themselves.

"I feel Germany and England have better chances because of the weather and conditions," said Mohammad Rafique.

The star left-arm spinner is one of the four Ronaldo head-alikes in the squad along with Aftab Ahmed, Shahriar Nafees Ahmed and Shahadat Hossain.

The quartet had performed the Umrah recently while they were in Saudi Arabia to appear in two exhibition matches.

Skipper Habibul Bashar disagreed with Rafique's observations and brushed aside England's chances saying that, "even the Premiership depended on foreign players because the English footballers were not up to the mark."

Bashar said he fancied Portugal's prospects because of Luis Figo and their Brazilian coach Luis Felipe Scolari.

Pace ace Mashrafee Mortaza and opener Javed Omar were convinced that Argentina had all the ammunition to lift the Cup but their voices soon got buried under the collective noise of the Brazil fanatics.

Assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin summed up the session: "The boys looked in good shape despite coming off a break. I believe they must have worked on their individual fitness over the last month or so. They were also in great spirit, something that has just carried over from the home series' against Sri Lanka, Kenya and Australia."
