FM to visit China June 6

Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan leaves for Beijing on June 6 on a three-day official visit at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart.

Talking to reporters at Zia International Airport Wednesday night on his return from Nam (Non-Aligned Movement) ministerial meeting in Kuala Lumpur, he said bilateral issues between Dhaka and Beijing would be discussed with Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing.

Asked if peaceful use of nuclear energy for which the two countries signed an agreement would come up for discussion, Morshed said the precise agenda of his talks were not yet finalised.

He however said it needs huge investment for production of nuclear energy. Bangladesh wants to use nuclear energy in medical science, power and agriculture sectors.

On the outcome of the Nam ministerial meeting held at Putrajaya in the Malaysian capital, the foreign minister said Bangladesh stressed the need for addressing the economic issues and free movement of people within the Nam member states.

He said the Nam ministerial meeting prepared the document of the Nam summit to be held in Cuba in September this year. The declaration touched upon, among others, Palestine and Iran nuclear issues.

In reply to a question, the foreign minister said Bangladesh wants that the disputes over Iran's nuclear enrichment programme should be resolved through peaceful dialogue with the West.

Foreign Secretary Hemayetuddin and other senior officials of the foreign ministry were present.
